Ways to improve vocabulary

I am studying Barron’s and kaplan books, but problem is that when I memorize words I forget them few days later.Any suggestion how should i go about it .

Just to add a few more tips, when learning through barron's word list, donot learn the list of one alphabet at one go and then move on to the next.. Cause you would end up confused.. or rather thats not the right way to build vocabulary..Try to learn words randomly.. Also make your own handwritten flash cards.. 1) One easy way to learn words is to know their origin. Read Word Power made easy- Norman Lewis for this.
2) Do not cram words. Use them in sentences andd context to help remember.
3) When dealing with adjective, associate them with a known person and remember.
4) Try a technique like this
Adage synonyms:
A Aphorism
D Dictum
A apothegm
G Gnome
E epithet
5) Try flash cards of your own, they work!!

Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis is definitely a must book to improve your vocabulary. There is a decent word list at the end of the book. After you complete that book, you can move to Barrons and Kaplan.
Also www.dictionary.com will give you the origin of the words. This might help you remember a few tough words as well as find similarities between a few words.

Right now i have a lot of time for my CAT so i was thinkin to start preparing for it somewhat informally , and then i thought to start working on my vocabulary & i will surly refer to the books u told .

(1) if u want to strong ur vocabulary stick to one book and maintain consistency...
(2) when ur learning new words make a sentence in ur mind ,not by writing in copy it will help u to recoznise the words forever....
(3) read the newspaper daily and learn new words
