What is a Ration Card?
A ration card is an important document issued by the State Government, to help the poorer sections of the society in availing necessary items at reduced rates from the government run fair price shops. In certain states of India, different ration cards are assigned to people who are above the poverty line, below the poverty line and the “antyodaya” class. Blue ration cards are often given away to those people who are below the poverty line. The Blue ration card ensures the procurement of basic commodities at further subsidized rates. Ration cards also serve the purpose of an identity proof for Indians. As such, many people produce the ration card as an identity proof to obtain other documents like Voter ID Card and the Domicile Certificate. Frequent review and checking of ration cards is done by the state authorities.
