The Consulates in India have introduced the system of online application of passports for greater efficiency and speedy services. This will not only enable applicants to get their passport within a lesser amount of time but decrease the chances of problems with the application. Every applicant needs to use the process of online application since the paper forms that were handed out earlier are no longer used or accepted by the passport offices. In case of each Consulate, the system only accepts a designated number of applications in a single day. Once the fixed limit for applications in a day has been reached, the date of appointment rolls over to the next date that is available. It is necessary to attempt to complete the application in a single shot since more than one try affects other applicants who are trying to get a passport. It is advisable not to bypass the system since any kind of deviation will prevent the applicant from printing the form in a correct manner.
The main documents that are required when applying for passport are:
- Necessary general fees
- Fill-in Form 1
- Two personal forms for details need to be filled out. In case the applicant has stayed in more than a single address over the course of the past year, those many sets of personal particular forms 1 must be duly filled out and submitted by the applicant.
- It is extremely important to offer proof of residence. If ration card is submitted, it becomes necessary to submit more than one residence proof during passport application.
- Proof of date of birth is a must. In case of applicants who were born after the 26th of January, 1989, the Birth Certificates must be collected from competent authorities.
- In case of ECNR, it becomes important to offer proof of 10th pass certificate or any other document that is specified under Section-III Column 15 in the Indian Passport Information Booklet.
If the applicant happens to be a government employee or statutory body employee or employed in the public sector undertaking, they need to submit two extra documents in the form of Notarized Affidavit as per the format seen in Annexure-I and the NOC or Identity Certificate as per Annexure-B.
Additional documents must be submitted by applicants who have applied for passport via Tatkaal. The fees in this case is considerably higher than the regular fees.
Online Passport Application
When the applicant is using Internet Explorer 7.0 browser, he/she may receive a message when trying to access the online passport site that the page is not safe. Ignore this and continue to the main webpage. In case of Firefox browser, get ready to click the ‘Add an exception’ option. Installation of a valid certificate will fix this minor issue.
If the date and time for the appointment are not accepted by the applicant, they will be unable to print the application out despite filling out the entire form. As soon as the appointment is accepted, the applicant will notice a certain form with fields those are mandatory. If every mandatory field is not entered, prompts will force the applicant to fill the details. Every bit of information submitted in the form must be true. It is necessary to remember that during the process of online application, no special characters must be entered in the form.
