Different people have defined a “mentor” in different ways. A mentor is a person who is described by many people as a coach, a guide, a tutor or a trusted counselor. In general when we talk about mentor there is a question which strikes our minds. This question is related to the qualities possessed by a mentor like level of skill, knowledge, attitude, personality, leadership, motivation, persuasion and so on. In order to become a good mentor one has to learn from his/her mentees because it is the mentees who matter the most to the mentor at the end of the day.

There are many institutions and coaching centers who undertake mentoring sessions for individuals and professionals. These institutions help to raise the standards of an individual. One can become a good mentor if he is ready to work hard and sacrifice his/her time and efforts. It has certain advantages and some disadvantages.
Advantages of becoming a mentor

Despite having the above mentioned advantages there are a lot of disadvantages and pitfalls of becoming a mentor.
Disadvantages of becoming a mentor
- It restricts individual freedom of the mentor.
- It involves a lot of time, effort and cost to become a highly qualified mentor.
- It restricts privacy of the mentor and he may sometimes not be able to maintain a balance between personal life and professional life.
- The mentor may find it real hard to cope up to the pressure of change as change is not easy.
It is certain that every coin has two sides and in the similar way there are many pros and cons of becoming a mentor. It is really very hard and difficult to become a good mentor and it is equally hard when one is already a good mentor. Despite a lot of challenges, obstacles and hurdles in life, it is absolutely necessary for a mentor to lead and guide his/her mentees and help them to learn and grow both personally and professionally as this is the thing which matters the most to any mentor at the end of the day.
Therefore, we can conclude that one can become a good mentor if they are hardworking, diligent, humble, modest and polite. They should possess good communication skills both verbally and in written form. A strong go-getter attitude and openness to changes in life are essential to success. One should be ready to go beyond their limits and should think of achieving the goals at any cost if one wants to become a good mentor.
