The TOEFL test is used by majority of colleges and universities the world over, as a yardstick to determine a candidate's ability to communicate in English.
One can take the Internet-based Test (iBT) or the Paper-based Test (PBT), depending on which format is offered at the test centre of choice.TOEFL Requirement
The test is recognised by English-speaking colleges and universities in The USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK and other countries to evaluate a person's ability to use and understand English in an educational institution and is sometimes an admission requirement for non-native English speakers here.Institutions such as government agencies, licensing bodies, businesses, or scholarship programs may also require this test. A TOEFL score is valid for two years and is not reported officially after that as a person’s language proficiency might have changed significantly since the date of the test. Colleges and universities generally consider only the most recent TOEFL score.
Structure of test
Internet Based Test:It has gradually replaced both the computer based and paper based tests ever since it was introduced in 2005. Candidates are allowed to take notes during the test and one can’t take the test more than once in the same week.
The structure of the test is as follows:
Task Description Time Reading 3–5 passages, each containing 12–14 questions 60–100 minutes Listening 6–9 passages, each containing 5–6 questions 60–90 minutes Break 10 minutes Speaking 6 tasks and 6 questions 20 minutes Writing 2 tasks and 2 questions 55 minutes Paper-Based Test: Offered where the internet based test cannot be administered. It is conducted on fixed dates six times a year and registration in advance is mandatory. All the sections of this three hour long test can be answered on the same day
The structure of the test is as follows:
Task Description
Time Listening 50 questions about short conversations, long conversations and lectures 30–40 minutes Structure and Written Expression 40 exercises on completing sentences, identifying errors 25 minutes Reading Comprehension 50 questions about reading passages 55 minutes Writing 250–300 word essay 30 minutes Score
Internet-Based Test
- The range of the internet based version of the TOEFL test is 0 to 120 points.
- Each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing) gets a score which is scaled score from 0 to 30. These scores are added together to determine the total score.
- Initially Speaking is given a score of 0 to 4 and writing, a score of 0 to 5. These are then converted to scaled scores of 0 to 30.
Paper-Based Test
- The final PBT score is based on the scores in the sub – sections: Listening (31–68), Structure (31–68),and Reading (31–67),giving an overall band of 310-677. The score of the Writing section is reported separately on a scale of 0–6.
- The final score is not the percent of correct answers instead the result is converted to reflect the ability of the candidate than the correct answer score as some tests might be more difficult than others.
The TOEFL result requirements differ from college to college and hence candidates are advised to check the same with the college they are applying to.
Registration
- The procedure for completing the registration form and submitting it given in the TOEFL Information Bulletin are to be followed exactly.
- The first step in the registration process thus becomes obtaining a copy of the TOEFL Information Bulletin. It can be downloaded or ordered from the TOEFL website.
- From the information bulletin one can determine when and where the iBT version of the TOEFL test will be given.
